Turf grasses generally perform poorly in shade ( just look at Telstra Dome) as most species are adapted to high light levels. This becomes worse when compounded by competition from trees and / or high levels of traffic. A recent study described in the August 2003 edition of Grounds Management looked at the effects of trinexapac-ethyl growth regulator and nitrogen additions on shaded turf. These applications resulted in improved colour, reduced ?succulence? and reduced shoot elongation. Neither application affected recovery from injury. Although the study looked at kentucky blue and bent grass, the results may have application to other turf types commonly used in landscapes.
