Melbourne is not the only place feeling the effects of drought. The Italian government may declare a state of emergency in the country?s drought-stricken north. High temperatures throughout June and July continue to threaten this year's wine harvest. Governors in Italy?s Piedmont and Emilia-Romagna regions, the country?s industrial and agricultural heartland, have already asked for help and the nearby Lombardy and Venice regions are planning to do the same. The Po river, which drains most of northern Italy, has fallen to a record 7.58 metres below its normal level at the weekend.
