ALM Note: Sustainable Water Use Plans PRESS RELEASE
from Melbourne Water & the MAV
In a joint initiative between the MAV and Melbourne Water, the Minister for Water, John Thwaites, announced on 12 June that $300,000 will be made available to councils in the metropolitan region to develop sustainable water use plans.
The Sustainable Water Use Plans will provide a straightforward and flexible structure for councils to help them conserve more water, and to enable councils to lead by example when it comes to promoting water conservation in their communities. The development of Sustainable Water Use Plans will integrate with other local government water management initiatives, such as stormwater and domestic wastewater planning.
Councils will be encouraged and eligible to apply for the grants irrespective of whether they are undertaking any existing water conservation activities.
A workshop and information package to inform councils about the program are currently being prepared.
Councils with existing activities in water conservation will be encouraged to build on these activities in their Sustainable Water Use Plan.
The Program offers:
Grants of $10,000 each are available to develop a Sustainable Water Use Plan.
Water use plans based on the City of Melbourne’s successful Sustainable Water Resources Plan.
All councils in the Melbourne metropolitan area will be eligible to apply for the grants.
To receive grant funds Councils will be asked to:
* Provide matching funding.
* Provide the necessary resources in-house to manage the development of the plan
* Undertake the plan development over a period of 3-6 months either with consultants or in-house.
* Work with Melbourne Water, local retail water companies, their community and other agencies in development of their Sustainable Water Use Plan.
